Andrea Cardinal was raised in and around Flint, MI, and currently resides in Toledo, OH. She is teaches art + design at both the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University. She is the sole proprietor of Tooth & Rag, LLC, a freelance design company based in Detroit since 2006. She is a co-director and collaborator with 4 permanent artists and a regular rotation of residents in her Detroit studio, the Talking Dolls.
She holds an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2D Design, as well as a BA in the History of Art and a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Michigan. Past positions include graphic designer at the Detroit Institute of Arts and exhibition design intern at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in New York. Her personal work is based on the unrealized potential of materials and people, through working class ethics, vulnerability, violence, and feminism. Her best work to date are her daughters, Drew & Emese.
