Andrea Cardinal is an experience designer and social practice artist originally from Flint, Michigan. She aims to reveal unrealized potential by mobilizing people and their resources to create justice in our communities. Her artwork is the design and management of immersive engagements, where new skills are discovered, camaraderie is built, and joyful labor is abundant. Her work focuses on building beloved-community through disability justice, working-class ethics, and interrogating vulnerability and violence. She holds an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2D Design, BA in the History of Art, and a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Michigan. Cardinal is Assistant Professor of Design at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, and Co-Director of Talking Dolls Studio in Detroit, Michigan. The mission of Talking Dolls is to empower our northeast Detroit neighborhood through justice-focused initiatives. We create a nexus of progressive art and community-led activism through access to our shop facilities, &amp; use of our infrastructure for performances, celebration, and experimental art workshops. We are also home to a Banner and Poster Lending Library, from which the public can borrow oversize banners and hand-held placards for actions, to then be returned and re-used. Cardinal has run numerous workshops to add to the archive in support of some of the following organizations: Black Youth Project 100, The School for Poetic Computation with the Detroit Community Technology Project, Detroit Democratic Socialists of America, and the Summer Scholars program at the University of Notre Dame. In addition to this work, Cardinal is also sole proprietor of Tooth &amp; Rag, LLC, a freelance design company with over 15 years experience designing and concepting for clients at a variety of scales. Clients include The Detroit Institute of Arts, The Museum of the American Indian in New York, The Seidman College of Business, and Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. We assembled at the police headquarters and when the permit and programming were up, we marched in the streets around the block. The surge of joy that we were collectively creating was punctured by wooden bullets that met us at the corner. Running away from the bullets at our backs, my family and I were shot with teargas canisters from our right—without warning, while we were on the sidewalk, fleeing. I carried this Red Flag at the march—its inaugural use—partly as a warning about the fascist terror that up until that point, I had been passively observing. I also use the flag pole as a cane to help with balance, which I struggle with due to physical disabilities and pain. After being teargassed, we poured water on this fabric to wipe our faces and hands. The chemical smell still lingers. Red Flags Everywhere is an online, crowd-sourced interactive project based on the writings of Hannah Arendt and the recognition of fascism in America today. I have instructional videos for how to make different kinds of red flags from small, hand-held flags, to house flags, and oversize banners. “The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e., the standards of thought) no longer exist.” “True goal of totalitarian propaganda is not persuasion, but organization of the polity. ...What convinces masses are not facts, and not even invented facts, but only the consistency of the system of which they are presumably part.” — Hannah Arendt Every time that something happens that feels wrong—for all the big and small injustices—I ask that you make a red flag. Any time something happens with our government, with the police, in your community, even with your friends and family, that feels like it's 'off', I ask that you manifest that feeling you have tangibly. made in the summer of 2017. They were four simple banners made from black fabric and an old white bedsheet with Assata Shakur’s words painted in red and white:&nbsp; IT IS OUR DUTY TO FIGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM IT IS OUR DUTY TO WIN WE MUST LOVE EACH OTHER AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT OUR CHAINS Immediately following the community workshop whose labor produced the banners, they were carried to the nearby 50/50 Rally: Remembering 50 years since the Detroit Rebellion and 50 years of Palestinian Occupation at Veterans Park in Hamtramck. These relatively simple objects were immediately embraced and activated by the revelers.&nbsp; Those banners have since been carried at numerous rallies, marches, direct actions, memorials, and celebrations over the past 4 years. They continue to be the most popular of the ‘library’ because Shakur's words offer guidance, resilience, care, and resolve. The banners that carry her message are approximately 4'x7' and they announce the intentions we set forth as a community. They were made during a moment of upheaval, but out of joyful, beloved community. For the outdoor festival, we provided a screen-printing station with each of the largest elements of the design on individual screens which our team printed on-demand onto canvas cut to 18"x24". All four stanzas of Shakur's incantation were designed to be unique components, emphasizing the meaning of each line and lending their flexibility within the canvas artboard. Another element, the hands of Grace Lee Boggs, were also included. All members of the community were welcome to participate—all ages were included and we ensured accessibility support for disabled folks.This was an interactive, collaborative performance of design, initiated by us, but realized with the community's enthusiastic involvement. We served the participants for nearly 6 hours non-stop, ultimately making about 75 unique pieces of art. This action was about building Beloved Community—carving out a space where we could share our skills and technology but made so much richer by creating with festival-goers. In this time of transition, we look to the wisdom of Assata Shakur and Grace Lee Boggs. "We must love each other and support each other". And "the only way to survive is by taking care of one another".
